SUGGESTED READINGS UNIT 1

The following list of suggested readings includes works that should be available in most Alaskan school or public libraries and that will provide more information about subjects discussed in this text. It is not intended as a comprehensive bibliography of sources on the natural history of Alaska.

Introduces Alaska.

A PHOTOGRAPHIC GEOGRAPHY OF ALASKA. Alaska Geographic, 7:2 (1980).
Divides Alaska into six regions and deals with each region's land, communities, and people.

BLAZING ALASKA'S TRAILS. 2nd ed. Fairbanks: University of Alaska Press, 1953.
The first chapter describe Alaska's geography, geology, and climate.

Central Intelligence Agency
POLAR REGIONS ATLAS. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1978.
Covers physical features, climate, people, and economic activities for the Arc-tic and Antarctic.

Johnson, Philip R. and Charles W. Hartman
ENVIRONMENTAL ATLAS OF ALASKA. College: University of Alaska, Institute of Water Resources, 1969.
Brings together a great deal of information on physical Alaska.

Orth, Donald J.
DICTIONARY OF ALASKA PLACE NAMES. U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 567. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1967.
Locates Alaska geographic features and gives brief information on the origin of each place name.
